Perfect Imprecision

Perfection, which stems from the Latin to
finish or bring to an end. When does the
point arrive to stop, to call something completed? In the practice of minimalist art where every small part plays an integral role, this question is a continual companion. Where precision is at the core of expression, it's arguably a very thin line to tread between sterile and emotive. At which point of reduction does a work of art keep the viewer engaged?

In these new works by Clare Goodwin, Mirjam Blanka Inauen and Adam Thompson, wood, canvas, paint, clay and glaze intersect and unfold. The manifestation of gesture is embedded in expressive forms, colour and composition. An apparent flawlessness - the pristine clarity of lines, curves and angles reveal themselves as the storytellers. These geometric entities are charged with a tactile sensibility, questioning the seemingly structured language of minimalism.

Despite their individual methods and materials, these artists share an origin in painting. Fragmented aspects thereof are evident in the rich glaze of Clare Goodwin's ceramic compositions and in the lacquered aluminium forms of Thompson's sculptural wall objects. The raw canvas in Mirjam Blanka Inauen's large scale hanging pieces complete the circle. Deconstructing and reassembling the process of painting naturally leads to a questioning of its definition. Although these works are all attached to the walls, they embody an inherent ambiguity for a clear categorisation.

Clare Goodwin
*1973 Birmingham, England. Sie lebt und arbeitet seit 2003 in Zürich. Sie studierte von 1993-1996 an der Winchester School of Art und von 1996-1998 am Royal College of Art, London. Goodwin untersucht visuelleund soziale Kontexte in Leinwandbildern, Keramiken, großformatigen Wandmalereien und Objekt-Möbel-Environ-ments. Ihre Arbeit spiegelt ihr Interesse an sozialen Geschichten, dystopischen Architekturen und Innenräumen wider. Der narrative Aspekt ihrer Arbeit und ihr formaler Rückbezug auf frühere Jahrzehnte wurde auch als «konstruktive Nostalgie» bezeichnet.

Mirjam Blanka Inauen
*1982 ist eine Künstlerin und Musikerin, die in Zürich lebt und arbeitet. Ihre visuelle Arbeit ist von der Musik inspiriert und zeichnet sich durch rhythmische Muster, leuchtende Farben und textile Oberflächen aus, die ein Gefühl von Präsenz, Nähe und Intimität vermitteln. Sie hat Soziologie, Anthropologie und Gender Studies in Medellin (Kolumbien), Puebla (Mexiko) und Lausanne studiert und als Soziologin gearbeitet, bevor sie sich ganz der visuellen Kunst und Musik widmete. Als Musikerin hat sie zahlreiche Songs geschrieben, mehrere Alben veröffentlicht und in ganz Europa Konzerte gegeben.

Adam Thompson
*1971 Chertsey, England. Er lebt und arbeitet in Zürich und Cesseras, Frankreich. Nach dem Studium an der Birmingham College of Art & Design widmet sich Thompson vorerst die Malerei. Diese Arbeiten zeigen figurative Werke mit Ölfarbe auf Leinwand. Zunehmend wird sein Pinselstrich abstrakter und er beginnt die Definition eines Malers zu hinterfragen und stellt die Intentionen grundlegend auf den Kopf. Es entstanden neuen Werkserien gänzlich unter Ausschluss der Gestik der Malerei.
